Heslop & Platt is a niche business specialising in French law and is based in Leeds, West Yorkshire.

The firm was formed in December 2008 by Barbara Heslop and Graham Platt, both of whom had extensive experience in English and French property law. Graham Platt was a practising solicitor and, whilst living in France during the early nineties, was admitted as an Avocat at the Court of Appeal in Douai, France. Barbara Heslop studied Law with French at the University of Kent and started her legal career at firms in London and Cambridge.

After working together at a multi-jurisdictional law practice in Leeds, they set up Heslop & Platt solicitors to specialise purely in French private client law work. Following Graham’s retirement, Barbara continued as a sole practitioner until, in 2019, Heslop & Platt joined forces with Ashtons Legal LLP.

Both firms are long-established players in this field with strong contacts among notaires, property agents, and banks across France. Jointly, the firms are the number one ‘go-to’ provider in the UK for those: buying or selling residential property in France, transferring ownership following divorce or separation, wishing to make a French Will to operate alongside their UK Will, or dealing with post-death estate administration involving a French property.

The teams from Heslop & Platt and Ashtons Legal LLP have now unified to take a leading position in the UK’s French Legal Services market. Matthew Cameron heads the team and can be seen regularly alongside Fabienne Atkin and others at exhibitions such as A Place in the Sun.

Barbara Heslop retired from legal services in 2022 and is happily living in the South of France.
